Nuclear energy is gained through nuclear fission, where uranium rods are forced to break apart and release fission products, ehich cause the uranium atoms to split and create heat. This heat, together with the cooling agent, which can be water or molten metals, creates steam which then powers turbine-driven generators.
Uranium is abundant on earth, but the uranium needed to obtain nuclear makes up only 1% of the world's uranium
Although nuclear power is very efficient and causes no pollution, it's waste product is radioactive, which worries poeple considering the threat these products pose in a worse case scenario.
An infamous disaster which altered the public's view on nuclear energy is what happened in Chernobyl in April,1986.
Nuclear energy now provides about 10% of the world's electricity from about 440 power reactors. Nuclear is the world's second largest source of low-carbon power (28% of the total in 2019).
Italy shut down its last two nuclear plants following the incident at Chernobyl. Today, the nuclear energy which represents 10% of total consumption is all imported.
